When I drop by el Tiki Tiki Blog it really feels like I’m visiting mi gente, mi familia, mi cultura. You can almost smell the Café Bustelo, and hear the laughter and the Spanish music. To me, el Tiki Tiki Blog is a familiar and comforting place in the blogosphere, and it always makes me smile and laugh. The blog is a celebration of growing up and living Latino in the United States, packed with essays, videos and photos!
My good friend Carrie, who is hilarious (and smart, and awesome, and a dulce de leche diva), posted this video on her website. It reminded me SO much of the way women in my family talk and express themselves…I loved the video so much, I asked Carrie to let me share it here.
In case you are wondering…What is “El Tiki Tiki”?
In Spanish — particularly Cuban Spanish — Tiki Tiki is a funny saying meaning constant conversation, constant habla habla, the kind of noise that would make non-Latinos a little crazy. It is talking fast, hands in constant motion about 17 subjects and somebodies all at once. Watch below (and don’t forget to get your morning cup of cultura at El Tiki Tiki).
