Spotlight on Melanie Edwards: Blogger & Entrepreneur

Share this:

Today’s spotlight is on Melanie Edwards, a successful Latina blogger and entrepreneur!  Melanie serves as an excellent role model for women who want to do it all.  She’s a mom, blogger, entrepreneur (and more), balancing it all quite well!

Tell us a little bit about yourself and your family

I was born in Puerto Rico and have lived in Orlando, Florida since I was a young child. I am the youngest of 3 and the only girl – we won’t get into the struggles of being the only girl in a protective Puerto Rican family, though. Now, I have my own family and have been married for 7 years; we have a nearly 5-year-old daughter and a second child on the way. Together, we are raising bilingual and multicultural (Trinidadian, Puerto Rican, and American) children. It makes for a lively household!

Personally, I enjoy researching and learning about my family’s history. Unfortunately, genealogy is one of those projects that I don’t have much time for these days. I also love to dance and as a family, we love to come up with impromptu dance parties in our living room. I am confident that our daughter thinks her daddy and I are the coolest parents in the world…at least for the next couple of years before she thinks our awesomeness is actually an embarrassment.

Melanie, tell us about your professional background and the type of work you’ve done in the past.

My educational and professional background includes a degree in Industrial & Systems Engineering, over 10 years experience in Information Technology, and 3 years of e-learning industry experience. I’ve worked many years on website development, content management systems, and digital media.

You are a very successful blogger.  How long have you been blogging and what led you to blogging?

I founded in 2006, 6 months after my daughter was born, with the goal of being able to work from home. I soon found out it wasn’t as easy as others made it seem, but also found a great community of women and mothers, with whom I was able to connect, learn from, and share my experiences.

You have two blogs.  Can you tell us about your content on each website?

ModernMami™.com is a lifestyle blog from the perspective of a Latina working mother. Typical content found on includes parenting, blogging and social media, Latino culture (particularly Puerto Rican culture), and concerns of working mothers and the WAHM, with a focus on work-life balance.

40weeks Plus is a pregnancy and review blog. It focuses on our journey in conceiving a second child, the pregnancy, and reviews and giveaways of pregnancy and baby products.

Over the past year, the community of Latina bloggers has really exploded.  What would you attribute this to, as someone who is both Latina and a blogger?

I believe that Latinas wish to connect with others that hold similar interests, goals, and struggles, such as those we often face in navigating two cultures. What better way to connect with such a community than by creating your own community via a blog and the use of social media? The beauty of it is that each Latina blogger embraces her peers and thus, the Latina blogging community continues to grow.

Recently, you launched a new online business.  Please tells us about Ella Media, the timeliness of this business and what your goals are.

Ella Media provides digital marketing and consulting services for large brands, small businesses, and social media savvy women. The goal of Ella Media is to connect businesses with today’s digital Latina to create valuable partnerships and social media campaigns.

More and more brands are leveraging the reach of social media Latinas. Brands and the PR agencies representing them are interested in marketing to Latinas and many times look to our community for help in doing so. With the continually growing digital Latina community, it was the perfect time for Ella Media to provide a much-needed service.

How can Ella Media help Latinas bloggers, specifically?  What should they do to connect with Ella Media?
