On the Couch with Christine–Dealing With Naysayers

On the couch with christine

Dear Christine,

I’ve been an elementary school teacher for 15 years, however I’ve never had a passion for what I do. I’ve wanted to leave my job for some time now, but have stayed because of the perks that it offers single parents like myself. How do I silence my anxiety and, most importantly, outside criticism when it comes to making the decision to leave teaching?

Hi Deanna,
Thanks for being vulnerable and courageous enough to ask for help. That takes guts–and with guts, determination and patience, you can create change!
So let’s start with what you said you know for sure: YOU DON’T ENJOY YOUR JOB. You know that to be true for yourself. That’s what matters most. Your question, however, seems to focus more on how to silence other people. What I’m sensing is that you don’t fully trust your own decision, so when others question your choices, they stir up feelings of anxiety for you. I’m here to tell you that it doesn’t matter what people say. They aren’t living your life. If you truly know that this is going to make you happy, then you owe it to yourself and to your children to live the life that you want.
I am going to give you a script to help you deal with your naysayers, but let me preface it by saying that what matters more to me is that you honor what makes you happy. Once you’re 100% sure that your decision will make you happy, say this to your naysayers:
“Thanks for sharing your opinion. However, I am completely confident that this is the best decision for me and my kids.”
Create boundaries. Say it with love, with strength, and with ease. Keep only those around you who support you, and if you can’t avoid them, use the script and keep it moving. Focus on your dreams, not on the naysayers. Live your life.
I hope this helps! Can’t wait to see you living your dreams! Keep me posted.
How do you deal with the naysayers present in your life? How do you go about making  life-changing decisions?
