In celebration of Mother’s Day, we are sharing love letters from our readers to their beloved mothers. This letter was written by Helen Troncoso.
Dear Mamá Juana,
You are probably so surprised that you are receiving this letter. Out of the six children you have, I think we butt heads the most, I think that is because we are also the most alike. You are truly the foundation and glue that keeps this family together.
Through the many tumultuous events that separate and divide many families like death, divorce, and family members moving away, you helped everyone realize that family is truly everything. Your warm embrace, words of wisdom and inspiration always made us feel better. Now thinking back as a grown woman, I can imagine how tough it must have been on you to remain that strong, how you must have held back your own tears, but you did it for us and I cannot thank you enough.
I remember going away to college, and while I was achieving academic success, you made sure to ask what activities was I involving myself in. You always made sure to let me know that I can be still be a proud Latina while navigating within this new world. Even now as I go after my dreams and when I confide in you that I am scared, feel overwhelmed, you give me just the right amount of love to let me whine a little and then tell me it’s time to stop feeling sorry for yourself, no one is going to hand it to you so get up and go for it! Aprovechalo!
Thank you Mamá Juana, I am so happy God chose you to be my mother.
I love you, te quiero.
