LATINAS THINK BIG™ LA: A Celebration of Innovation, Ambition & Social Impact
On Friday, October 11, 2013, hundreds of innovative and socially-minded Latinas were present–in mind, body and spirit–at Google’s Los Angeles Office for the second stop on the LATINAS THINK BIG™ national tour, to honor Latinas who dared to think big, and encourage every one of the hundreds of live and virtual viewers to do the same. To say the least, the evening was powerful, it was impactful, it was BIG!
LATINAS THINK BIG™LA: The BIG Day
From start to finish, the evening was electric! Live and virtual guests connected on and offline with one another, sharing their BIG IDEAS, excitement, and social media impact!
Sponsored by Google and broadcast to virtual viewers via Google+ Hangout On Air, LATINAS THINK BIG™ LA featured presentations by five talented Latina leaders–Noramay Cadena, Estefania Ortiz, Veronica Villafañe, Pamela Campos Palma, and Rocio Romero–and honored three innovative Latino professionals–Monica Gil, Eliana Murillo, and Martin Mares–for the outstanding work they’ve contributed to the Latino community and beyond.
Originally intended to celebrate and recognize Latinas’ impact on technology, business, academia, and the economy, the event also highlighted how mothers and motherhood have impacted Latinas’ career success.
Boeing Engineer Noramay Cadena shared her extraordinary story of becoming a teen mother and persevering to become a three-time MIT graduate. Of her journey, she shared: “I went to MIT with a 1 year-old. Now, we’ve received 3 degrees from MIT.” No small feat, any way that you look at it.
Another major moment in the program was when Air Force reservist and Intelligence Analyst Pam Campos shared a story about how her mother inspired and pushed her to become the woman she is today by “making” her join the military, and tearing up as she spoke to the crowd about her mother’s profound impact on her life. There is no doubt that, during the long pause the followed, many live and virtual guests were reflecting on how their mothers, or their experiences as mothers, have impacted their life’s journey…so far.
The event concluded with two more BIG moments: Dr. Angelica Perez-Litwin’s interview with Monica Gil, and ELLA honoring three extraordinary Latino leaders.
Dr. Perez-Litwin’s interview with Monica Gil was an opportunity for guests to gain insight into the story behind the woman who brought us Nielsen’s Latina Power Shift Report. Not surprisingly, Ms. Gil’s professional journey was motivated by her upbringing as part of a large family, with her mother at the helm. “Every decision that I make has been driven by my family,” Monica shared, referencing the “power” of her family, and every Latina’s family. When asked about why she was moved to present the Latina Power Shift Report, Ms. Gil stated that it was because it’s about time that we, Latinas and Latinos, begin to tell our own story–a sentiment at the very center of the LATINAS THINK BIG™ mission.
Keeping with the night’s theme of celebration, family, and recognition, the ELLA Leadership Institute honored Monica Gil, Martin Mares, and Google’s own Eliana Murillo with awards for Outstanding Executive Leadership, Outstanding Innovation, and Outstanding Servant Leadership, respectively, and welcoming them into the ever expanding ELLA family.
The evening concluded with an informal networking hour, during which live guests were gifted the full Latina Power Shift Report; a copy of Graciela Tiscareno-Sato’s much-lauded book, Latinnovating; and 15 lucky guests were even gifted free Google Chromebooks to celebrate Google’s quinceañera!
Though the LATINAS THINK BIG™ LA event concluded over a week ago, the Latina/o community continues to THINK BIG and TWEET BIG about the event! Take a look at our favorite quotes, tweets, and images of the LATINAS THINK BIG™ LA event:
