Today’s spotlight is on Amy Javier, fashionista, entrepreneur and creator of Style Bloomer.
What is your country of origin or family heritage?
My parents are Dominican from the Dominican Republic. My mother came to NYC when she was seven years old. My father wooed my mother by commenting on how gorgeous her hair was and constantly getting her flowers during their courtship. My mother was crowned a “Reina”, also known as a pageant queen, in a Dominican Republic parade. My father was a young musician here in the states. I was introduced to being a queen and to the love of the arts at a very young age.
Education:
I attend the Fashion Institute of Technology for Fashion Merchandise Management. I have my Associates of Science and will obtain my Bachelor of Science in 2014. To me, FIT is like a marvelous fashion-forward friend with insider tips.
Profession/ Career:
I am currently a New York City based stylist and Online Merchandiser/Style Curator for a start-up internet based shopping guide. I am also founder of Style Bloomer which is my own styling and fashion awareness start-up which promotes appropriate dressing for youth. Style Bloomer is also a style consultation start-up, where women of all ages explore their femininity, and become empowered, through the use of this creative wardrobe-enhancing program. It rewards my clients by exploring their creativity through style. I am always taking on new clients. You can follow Style Bloomer on Twitter @StyleBloomer, and stay tuned for the launch of our website!
What has been your most important professional or social accomplishment, thus far?
My most important professional accomplishment has been going forward with my styling vision. This is important to me because I believe that in order to be successful one must possess grace and creativity. I want to help powerful and successful women to look the part. I am proud of how far we, as women, have come, and I believe that clothes can make a woman feel that much more comfortable in her own skin.
What/Who Inspires You To Be Your Best?
You know that part of you that tells you to do the right thing? That inspires me EVERYDAY. It inspires me to let go of any fear or any limitations I may put on myself.
Also, Oscar de La Renta, Oprah, Grace Coddington, Carl Jung, Anna Wintour and Jesus Christ inspire me.
What is your favorite magazine/newspaper and television show?
My favorite magazines are Vogue and Harpers Bazaar.
Countries you have visited, and your favorite one…
I have visited Bermuda, my home country of Dominican Republic and Ireland. Dominican Republic is rich in life, Ireland is rich in wonder and Bermuda is very authentic. I love all three very much.
Describe a perfect day off from work.
My perfect day off would be sailing out at sea or going to the park and playing on the swings. I actually used to work on a yacht a couple of years ago and watching the sunset everyday while floating over the Hudson River never felt like “work”.
Flats or Stilettos?
I prefer a thick heel on a shoe.
What has been your biggest challenge in life?
My biggest challenge has been being a success-conscious person while growing up in a culture that is satisfied with whatever they are given. I think that being a Latina has it’s own set of unique cultural challenges and expectations, many of which I have learned to embrace. However, some of the expectations do not go hand-in-hand with what my soul believes is right for me.
What do you do for fun? What makes you laugh out loud?
I like dancing so much. I also make mood boards, shop fabrics and buy myself flowers for fun. Everyday is a good time for me. What makes me laugh out loud? Children and how free they are makes me laugh out loud. They are truly inspirational.
How would you describe your style?
My personal style is intelligent and lifted. If I style someone it is my hope to improve their appearance and to make them proud enough of how they look. I want them to be able to lift their head up a bit.
