Did you know that only 8% of children who grow up in low-income communities graduate from college by the age of 24? Teach For America is trying to eliminate such educational inequalities in low-income communities by recruiting and training high-achieving recent grads and professionals to teach in low-income areas throughout the United States. Though the organization recruits participants who demonstrate academic excellence, provides members with an intensive 5-week training program and has received excellent reviews from principals who employ TFA teachers, some still question the organization’s effectiveness.
