The joy of watching a blue jay on our deck
The month of June was packed with end of school year events — Kindergarten celebrations, high school proms, a graduation and a big family fiesta to wish our daughter the best as she heads to college.
This meant I had lots to organize, prepare for and a long list of things to do. I found myself doing some heavy-duty spring cleaning in the summer — I emptied out a garage that was filled with baby furniture, toys and clothes awaiting to be donated for years. I cleaned our backyard and got rid of all the junk we had accumulated under the deck, and I arranged the furniture in our basement.
I asked my mother to come help with deep cleaning — which is her specialty. I love to see how proud my mother feels when she cleans the windows, the stove, the cabinets and the walls — “Angelica! Come and look how I cleaned these windows…!”
In the midsts of all the running around, cleaning and preparing for all the events, I found myself stressed out and tired, of course. But this time, something was different. Not sure why. For some reason, I found myself looking for a bird feeder and beautiful flowers to plant at home. Me? flowers? Me? Bird feeder? Oh, yes!
I came home with a bag of sunflower seeds and bird food. I couldn’t wait to watch all the beautiful birds that would land on our deck and enjoy a quick meal. And so, my biggest joy over the past couple of weeks has been watching cardinals, blue jays and sparrows!
I was also surprised by my inclination to get a bunch of flowers for the new porch we built in front of the house! Aren’t these gorgeous?
What’s really nice was watching the small white butterflies that have come over to dance around the new flowers. I was hoping to take a picture, but they flew away before I got my camera ready.
The three years I lived in Dominican Republic — between the ages of 5 and 8 — I experienced the peace and social value of porches – or galerias. Recently, we decided to build a porch at home. I love it. It’s my favorite place in the house now…I go there to be still and get centered.
What helps YOU relax? Do you love watching birds and gardening?
