I must admit that as beauty conscious as I may be, I still have my days when I occasionally sleep in my makeup, forget to wash my makeup brushes or go weeks without doing a deep conditioning treatment on my hair. The good thing about starting a new year is that it leaves room for improvement. Here are a few beauty resolutions I have to make 2012 an even more beautiful year!
Throw Out Old Makeup
What better time then now to clean out your makeup bag? Look out especially for mascaras you’ve been holding on to for more then three or four months. Mascara tubes are the perfect breeding ground for bacteria! If it’s been less than three months, but you notice a change in consistency or a strange odor, it’s time to toss it!
Resolution # 2
Wear Sunscreen Everyday
Dermatologists have been advising us for the longest to wear sunscreen on a daily basis. Even though I’ve been good at always wearing sunscreen on my face, I tend to ignore other parts of my body, like my neck. The trick is to invest in a moisturizer that already contains at least SPF 30. Make sure to extend your moisturizer down to your neck for optimal results. Remember that your hands are exposed to the sunlight just as much as your face and neck. Make sure to invest in a hand cream that includes SPF to keep your hands protected all year long too. It’s important to incorporate sunscreen as part of your daily beauty routine, because not only does it defend you from skin cancer, but it also helps prevents wrinkles and sunspots that are all caused by the sun’s harmful rays!
Don’t Sleep In Your Makeup
We all know we’re not supposed to do it, but sometimes after a long day we just can’t help it. Sleeping in your makeup can cause your skin to break out as well as lead to dark circles or puffy eyes the morning after. Make sure to wash your face every night before going to sleep. Keep a pack of cleansing wipes on your nightstand for the nights when the bathroom sink feels like it’s 50 miles away.
Resolution # 4
Relax with The Hot Water
I know nothing feels better than a nice, steamy shower. But very hot water can really dry out your skin. Try to shower with warm water instead, your skin will thank you!
Always Moisturize After Showering
Speaking of showers, one habit I definitely want to shake off next year is forgetting to moisturize after showering. Warm and hot water instantly strip your skin of natural oils. So it’s important to apply a good body lotion right after coming out of the shower. The trick is to leave one in the bathroom so when you get out of the shower you remember that you need to apply it. Pat dry your skin so that it’s still damp (it will lock in moisture better then if skin is completely dry), then apply the lotion.
See a Dermatologist
It’s important to have a dermatologist survey your body at least once a year. Yearly screenings for skin cancer are absolutely crucial!
Resolution # 7
Drink More Water
One thing is for sure; I definitely don’t drink enough water! Doctors suggest you drink at least eight glasses of water a day. Remember that are bodies are made up of about 70 percent of water. Water is absolutely necessary to maintain a strong and healthy body. So make sure to drink up!
Resolution # 8
Do a Breast Exam
Make sure to give yourself a breast exam in the shower at least once a month. Using your first three fingers check your breast by moving your hand in a circular motion. Look out for abnormal lumps or difference in the tissue of your breast. If you do notice anything, make sure to immediately consult with your doctor.
Resolution # 9
Working out doesn’t just keep your body in great shape, but also gives your complexion a natural glow and is great way to relieve stress and anxiety. If you’re not one for heavy cardio, try pilates or yoga.
Resolution # 10
Do a Deep Conditioning Treatment Every Week
Especially for those of us that heat dry, our hair can lose moisture, becoming brittle and dry. It’s important to hydrate your hair every week with a deep conditioning treatment to help restore moisture and repair dry hair. Doing a deep treatment once a week can improve the look and health of your hair, leaving it smooth, moisturized and shiny!
Resolution # 11
Clean your Cell Phone
According to a study done in the United Kingdom, our cell phones contain more germs than a toilet seat. Gross! Forget breakouts, a dirty phone can even lead to skin infections! Keep your phone clean by frequently cleaning it either with anti-bacterial wipes or with rubbing alcohol and cotton swaps.
Resolution # 12
Exfoliate More Often
With age our skin cells slow down and dry out, causing skin to lose luster and get dull. Jumpstart the renewal process and get your skin to glow by exfoliating at least twice a week.
Wash Your Pillowcases
You may not realize it, but your pillowcases house sweat and oil from your face and your hair, which can lead to breakouts. Make sure to toss your pillowcases in the wash every week.
Wash Your Makeup Brushes
Makeup brushes contain makeup and oil build up, which can lead to break outs or even skin irritation if not cleaned regularly. Make sure to wash your makeup brushes once a week either with a makeup brush cleanser or a liquid hand soap and lukewarm water.
Resolution # 15
Do Kegel Exercises
Try to dedicate a few minutes everyday to do your Kegel exercises. It helps tone the pelvic muscles that support the uterus, bladder and bowel. If that’s not enough to get you to do them, it may interest you to know that Kegel exercises are known to help make sex even more satisfying!
