A hard-to-please reviewer on Yelp describes the tactic he employed to make sure that the Japanese restaurant he was about to visit was the “Real deal.” He called ahead, spoke Japanese, and was relieved to hear “moshi moshi” instead of “Hola” or “Hey, bro.” Upon visiting the restaurant, finding a menu with hard-to-find Japanese dishes such as okonomiyaki and further confirming with the Japanese-speaking owner that those dishes are prepared on site the reviewer was delighted. He struck luck! He had found the hard-to-find “authentic” Japanese restaurant. Little he knew that the Japanese-speaking owner is José, a young Spanish-speaking Guatemalan immigrant. ¡Las apariencias engañan!
